Howdy, y'all! I'm Brooke. I create print & web content exploring travel & culture in Japan. I also provide online content marketing services.
Making writer's block look good since 2011.
Born below sea level in New Orleans, raised among the neon-lit streets of Osaka, and living under the Los Angeles sun, I've always felt a strong connection between the places I inhabit and my personal identity.
As a writer, I aim to make people fall in love with the cities I adore by penning travel guides and features about the places I've called home. My pieces mainly focus on the captivating and resilient country of Japan, though I've written about American locales as well.
But you don't want my life story — you want to know what makes my words worth reading in the first place!
I have over eight years of experience researching, writing, & editing articles for popular websites & magazines.
I worked as an editor for multiple print publications on subjects from art to travel.
I lived in Japan for six years, honing my expertise on local attractions, culture, food, & the outdoors, especially in & around Osaka & Kyoto.
Check out my portfolio for more details! I'm currently not taking on new projects, but you're still welcome to get in touch.
"Brooke develops beautiful relationships with everyone she works with. She has vision and foresight, and is clearly a student of people, places and the world at large; through her writing she shares interesting perspective on all of the above!"
"Brooke's an endless wellspring of wit and creativity. Her neurons must fire off a thousand times faster than the rest of us mere mortals'. I can't keep up. I've honestly never known anyone with such an infectious sense of humor and positivity. She's an addiction. Once you've got Brooke in your life, you'll be hooked. Don't say I didn't warn you."
MOLLY LAZARUS, former coworker & creator of Kink Out Loud
"I worked with Brooke on a number of articles dealing with a range of topics from Japanese subculture to highlighting Osaka's coolest's neighborhoods. Brooke pitches thoughtful and unique article ideas, takes editing notes very well, and is always willing to go the extra mile to put forth the best possible article for publication. I am very grateful for having connected with Brooke, who brought many interesting articles to the publications I worked on. She is a true professional and an absolute pleasure to work with. Given the chance, I would work with Brooke again in a heartbeat and cannot wait to see where her professional endeavors take her next."
VICTORIA VLISIDES, former Managing Editor of GaijinPot
"Brooke has been a freelance contributor to Kansai Scene — the premier inbound tourism magazine for the Kansai area of Japan — for a number of years and has been a delight to work with. She is in charge of our art pages where she collates and curates our art listings to highlight the best exhibitions and art events in the region each month. She also writes colorful, snappy travel features and listicles that help our readers to get the most out of their time in Kansai. If you're looking for a creative and resourceful freelancer with an engaging writing style who is a pleasure to work with, I highly recommend Brooke for the job."

Los Angeles, CA | Osaka, Japan | New Orleans, LA
Howdy, y'all! My name is Brooke. I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana — the (swamp)land of colorful cottages, rich rouxs, and hyperbolic history — and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I owe the city for my love of antiquity, literature, travel, and the bizarre. (I used to live near a streetcar stop straight up called "Cemeteries." All my neighbors were dead.)
I started writing in elementary school, crafting lengthy tales about fantastical locations for assignments that didn’t even require it. My love for the written word later followed me halfway around the world to Osaka, Japan where I lived for six years, attempting to spread Southern charm and find the best okonomiyaki. In Japan, I traveled extensively, soaking in hot springs surrounded by snow in northern Hokkaido and trekking across the forested mountains of Yakushima down south. I also cosplayed, got tied up at a rope bondage show, and made a pilgrimage to a boob temple. Y'know, the usual.
Now I'm in the Greater Los Angeles Area of California where I survive on In-N-Out Burger. In my free time, I read, play video games, do yoga, and hike.
